The clapboard farmhouse dates to about 1904 and originally had a hip roof and a three-columned double gallery typical of early twentieth-century North Texas vernacular building. The Rayburn family has owned the property since 1914, and Sam Rayburn bought a half interest in 1916. In 1933 he enlarged and remodeled the house, widening the main facade to three bays, adding a four-columned portico with two-story Tuscan columns, and changing the roof to a gable. The detailing is loosely derived from the late Georgian style. Rayburn served forty-eight years in the U.S. House of Representatives and was Speaker from 1940 to 1961, helping pass farm legislation and the Rural Electrification Act. The house keeps his furniture, china, silver and personal effects, and was being restored as a house museum.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular North Texas farmhouse, enlarged in 1933 with detailing loosely derived from the late Georgian style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good and unaltered; the house was undergoing restoration to operate as a house museum run by the Texas State Historical Survey Committee.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.0693-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/9719/40971926/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/72001361.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001361/81732c2c31-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001361/81732c2c31-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"TxHC (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sam_Rayburn_House_Museum_in_2009.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">TxHC (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sam_Rayburn_House_Museum_in_2009.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971926","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Rayburn_House_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7408057"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/fannin-county/rayburn-samuel-t-house-72001361/"}
