Lincoln served at Saratoga, defended Charleston, accepted the British surrender at Yorktown, and later served as secretary of war and put down Shays' Rebellion.","narrative":"This two-story clapboarded frame house at 181 North Street in Hingham grew in three stages. Thomas Lincoln began it in 1637 with two rooms in the northeast corner. In 1715 a large kitchen, a new main dining room and a stair hall gave it an L-shape. In 1790 General Benjamin Lincoln added a center stair hall and parlor, producing the present rectangular plan and a balanced seven-bay Georgian south facade. Fireplace walls in the principal rooms are fully panelled, and the front parlor fireplace is faced with blue delft tiles. The house was listed because it was Benjamin Lincoln's home from 1733 to 1810. He was a Major General in the Continental Army who fought at Saratoga, surrendered Charleston in 1780, accepted the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781, served as secretary of war, and led state troops against Shays' Rebellion. The house stayed in one family for over 300 years, has never been restored, and still holds original Lincoln furniture and the General's personal items.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Thomas Lincoln (started the dwelling in 1637); General Benjamin Lincoln (1790 additions)","architectural_style":"Georgian appearance on the main facade (1790 additions); organic growth house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence, not open to visitors; in the same family for more than 300 years, little altered and never restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.965016-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7938/63793821/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/72001303_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001303/403d02b99d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001303/403d02b99d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Timothy Valentine","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GeneralBenjaminLincolnHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Timothy Valentine</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GeneralBenjaminLincolnHouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"90001728","name":"Lincoln Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/lincoln-historic-district-90001728/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793821","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Benjamin_Lincoln_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5531731"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/plymouth-county/lincoln-gen-benjamin-house-72001303/"}
