Its clapboard and shingle walls, steep gable roof, three tall brick chimneys, wraparound porch and cupolaed carriage house remain recognizable. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. bought it from Marshall's widow in 1909. For about 35 years after joining the U.S. Supreme Court, he divided his time between Washington and Beverly Farms, arriving in early June and staying until October. He reviewed cases there with a law student as secretary and hosted guests such as Justice Brandeis and Sir Frederick Pollock. In 1916 he met Harold Laski there, beginning a long correspondence. After Holmes died in 1935 the property was sold and the furnishings dispersed, but the exterior and setting changed little. The house is recognized as the only surviving structure directly tied to his personal life. A porch enclosure and sliding glass doors are later changes.","period_of_significance":"1909-1935","architect_builder":"Asa Obear Marshall (builder)","architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Private residence in good condition, occupied and altered in minor ways; entrance to the house and grounds is prohibited.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.17503-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/7937/63793703/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/72001301_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001301/6e71b6172e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001301/6e71b6172e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_OliverWendellHolmesHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BeverlyMA_OliverWendellHolmesHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793703","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Wendell_Holmes_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715800"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/holmes-oliver-wendell-house-72001301/"}
