The original 1815 section was later joined by a late nineteenth-century south addition.","why_significant":"The building served as the seat of county government after Union County was created in 1813 and New Berlin was designated the seat. It was later used as a school for nearly a century and is noted for its Federal-period origins and its role in the county's early development.","narrative":"Built in 1815 on a corner lot at Market and Vine streets in New Berlin, this two and a half story brick building was the Union County courthouse. The parcel was bought from Christopher Seebold for sixty-seven cents, and the courts and county offices moved to New Berlin in May 1815. The building was constructed in a classical style typical of the period and anchored the young county's government. When Snyder County was formed in 1855, the county seat moved to Lewisburg, and the building became a school for nearly a century, until about 1952. Alterations during the school years included a Victorian-era addition on the south side, new window pediments, and a rebuilt cupola of about 1857 to 1865. It is significant for its association with early county government and for its Federal-period brickwork and frame. It was later used as a factory warehouse and has deteriorated.","period_of_significance":"1815","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical style typical of the period","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Deteriorated; used in more recent years as a factory warehouse; community members are seeking to restore and reuse it","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.253559-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/72001179.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001179/5a732e5cbf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001179/5a732e5cbf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ruhrfisch (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Union_County_Courthouse_(New_Berlin,_Pennsylvania)_3.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruhrfisch (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Union_County_Courthouse_(New_Berlin,_Pennsylvania)_3.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996690","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Union_County_Courthouse_(Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7085349"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/union-county/old-union-county-courthouse-72001179/"}
