The original block measures 47 by 22 feet, with a rear wing 21 by 30 feet, while porches and later rear buildings were added in several periods. A dressed stone front, a rubble masonry retaining wall along the sidewalk, and an entrance porch framed by two Doric columns with an arched opening under a gable give the house its formal face. Its interior woodwork, staircases and flooring are largely original and well preserved. The house was owned by Theobald Endt from 1745 to 1765, later passed to Philip Gabel, William Forbes and Isaiah Hacker, and served as a boarding school. Artists Joseph Pennell and Herbert Pullinger made etchings of it. In 1927 Isaiah Hacker Howell and Susan Hacker Bodine gave it to the Germantown Historical Society, which has used it as headquarters since. It lies within the Germantown Avenue National Historic Landmark area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied by the Germantown Historical Society, which received it as a gift in 1927 and has used it as headquarters since.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.895854-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/72001149.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001149/fb00daf55b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001149/fb00daf55b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:5214_Germantown_Ave.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:5214_Germantown_Ave.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000678","name":"Colonial Germantown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/colonial-germantown-historic-district-66000678/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997030","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conyngham-Hacker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5166787"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/philadelphia/conyngham-hacker-house-72001149/"}
