It is also presented as representing the home of a prosperous northeastern Pennsylvania family, the Reynolds family, who owned it for about four generations.","narrative":"Built in 1843 in Wilkes-Barre, this two and one-half story brick house is a Greek Revival dwelling with a wide wooden cornice, five bays across, six-over-six sashes and a recessed front entrance with fluted tapered columns. Its interior has large, simple woodwork, marble fireplace mantels and a handsome stairway. Reportedly built by merchant Elizah Reynolds, it stayed in the Reynolds family for roughly a century, including Judge William Champion Reynolds and later Edward Sheldon Reynolds, a lawyer and local historian who organized a Yale alumni society there. Victorian alterations were made in the 1880s and a renovation around 1905 restored many original features. Its surviving Greek Revival character makes it one of the few examples of the style in Luzerne County in good condition. Wilkes College acquired the house in 1957 and named it for the painter George Catlin, a Wilkes-Barre native.","period_of_significance":"1843","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a women's residence hall by Wilkes College; the college acquired it in 1957.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.3566-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/72001132.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001132/3d1a598b2f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001132/3d1a598b2f-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Catlin_Hall_Wilkes_U_WB_PA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Catlin_Hall_Wilkes_U_WB_PA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85002328","name":"River Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/river-street-historic-district-85002328/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998724","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catlin_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5053567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/luzerne-county/catlin-hall-wilkes-college-72001132/"}
