It is a building at its original site.","why_significant":"The house is associated with Andrew Ellicott, who lived here from 1801 to 1813 and is described as the first United States Surveyor General under George Washington. Ellicott completed surveys of the Mason-Dixon Line and laid out several cities, and the house is also tied to the Sehner family, prominent early Lancaster builders. The exterior retains its original Georgian character with alterations limited mainly to window glazing.","narrative":"Built around 1780 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this two and one-half story brick Georgian town house has a three-bay front with the door on the far left. Master carpenter Gottlieb Sehner designed and built it, and his family occupied it until 1801, when Andrew Ellicott became the owner. Ellicott lived here from 1801 to 1813. He had served as the first United States Surveyor General under George Washington, helped reconstruct and complete the design of the national capitol in Washington, and completed surveys of the Mason-Dixon Line and part of the U.S.-Canadian border. He also laid out the cities of Erie, Meadville and Franklin, and advised Meriwether Lewis before the Lewis and Clark expedition. The house is significant chiefly for that association with Ellicott's career. Its doorway has a pediment and dogear detailing, and its exterior remains in very good condition.","period_of_significance":"1850-1899","architect_builder":"Gottlieb Sehner (master carpenter; designed and built)","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"The house appears to be in a very good state of preservation, particularly the exterior.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.582835-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/72001128.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001128/227892f899-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001128/227892f899-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellicott_House_Lancaster_PA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellicott_House_Lancaster_PA.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996095","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Ellicott_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4756888"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/ellicott-andrew-house-72001128/"}
