It is five bays wide and faces west, with a center door under a triangular pediment opening onto a through hall. The dining room and parlor have fully panelled fireplace walls and elaborate mantels, and the parlor also has an elaborate cornice. Glover lived here from 1762 to 1782. He rose from shoemaker and fish vendor to merchant and then to brigadier-general in the Continental Army. His regiment of Marblehead fishermen secretly moved Washington's army from Long Island in August 1776 and carried it across the Delaware on Christmas night that year. He also served at Saratoga and in Rhode Island. The house is regarded as little altered and largely original, and it remains a private residence closed to visitors.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (house dated 1762-82)","architect_builder":"John Glover","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, occupied and used as a private residence; described as little altered and not open to visitors.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.346409-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/7936/63793697/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/72001101_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001101/2490de72bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001101/2490de72bf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Glover_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Glover_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002402","name":"Marblehead Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/marblehead-historic-district-84002402/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793697","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_John_Glover_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5531974"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/glover-gen-john-house-72001101/"}
