It describes the site as a rare survival, probably unique in its completeness and integrity, and as a valuable example of Pennsylvania German farm wagon production.","narrative":"The Gruber Wagon Works is a two-and-a-half-story, T-shaped wooden frame wagon factory in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Its main section was built in 1882, and a 1906 addition housed a painting and drying room and an elevator. Both sections have medium gable roofs with cornices, and the windows are symmetrically placed double-sash units with plain moulding. An oriel was added to the first floor at a rear corner, where the office is located. The interior holds the machinery a wagon maker needed, including one of only two hydraulic rim-shrinking machines in the country. Original wagon makers' benches with vises, a bandsaw, spoke-setting rigs, a spoke-shaving machine, a tire shrinker and bender, and a forge with trip hammer are present. Power comes from a 1906 Otto gasoline engine made in Philadelphia. The factory is regarded as an extremely rare survival of a wagon works, largely unchanged since its construction, and an important record of Pennsylvania German farm wagon production.","period_of_significance":"1882-1906","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Complete and virtually unaltered; machinery remains inside the building.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:29.922986-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/72001092.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001092/2dfa70397b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001092/2dfa70397b-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"William Edmund Barrett, Photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gruber_Wagon_Works,_Pennsylvania_Route_183_%26_State_Hill_Road_at_Red_Bridge_Park,_Bernville_vicinity_(Berks_County,_Pennsylvania).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">William Edmund Barrett, Photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gruber_Wagon_Works,_Pennsylvania_Route_183_%26_State_Hill_Road_at_Red_Bridge_Park,_Bernville_vicinity_(Berks_County,_Pennsylvania).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997964","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gruber_Wagon_Works","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5611888"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/berks-county/gruber-wagon-works-72001092/"}
