Court Street at Ohio Avenue in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio, designed by Louis Sullivan and erected in 1917-1918 as the People's Savings & Loan Association Bank.","why_significant":"It was one of the last works of architect Louis Henri Sullivan and is described as the finest of his small midwestern bank buildings, and his personal favorite. Its colorful brick, terra cotta and glass mosaic design, along with advanced air conditioning and lighting for its period, illustrates his ideas of functional design and original ornament.","narrative":"This small bank on Sidney's Public Square was designed in 1917 by Louis Sullivan, one of his last works. The rectangular brick building glows with color: a nearly black verde marble base, vibrant red brick, glass mosaic in blues, purples and greens, and terra cotta ranging from green to brown. A large recessed arch frames the entrance, with a light blue mosaic tympanum bearing the single word \"Thrift.\" Inside, the banking room is open and lit by a skylight and leaded windows, and a polished steel vault door is centered on the main axis behind plate glass. Mechanical systems, including air conditioning and electric lighting, were advanced for the period. Sullivan took on small commissions in Midwestern towns late in his career, and this bank is considered the finest of them and his personal favorite. It was built close to his estimate despite wartime conditions. The building has been kept in excellent repair and still operates as a bank, with only its original lampposts lost.","period_of_significance":"1917-1918","architect_builder":"Louis Henri Sullivan (architect); Louis J.
