It housed Knights of Pythias lodge meetings from 1890 to 1951 and the J. W. Greene piano firm until 1960. It was designed by the Toledo firm Bacon and Huber.","narrative":"Pythian Castle is a large Romanesque-style building at the corner of Jefferson and Ontario Streets in Toledo. Five lodges of the Knights of Pythias bought a vacant lot there in 1889 and built a five-story stone and brick temple, finished in 1890. It served both as a lodge meeting place and as a business building. The exterior features rusticated sandstone blocks, giant round arches on the third floor, triangular dormers, and a corner tower with four turrets and a conical roof. Carved relief capitals mark the arched entrance at the southeast corner. A fire gutted the top of the tower, and its windows were later sealed. The Consolidated Concord-Toledo Lodge No. 20 met in the building weekly from 1890 until 1951, and the J. W. Greene Company, a piano seller founded in 1871, occupied three floors until 1960. Bacon and Huber, a prominent Toledo architectural firm, designed it. It was listed as a distinctive architectural landmark in Toledo's business district.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1890)","architect_builder":"Bacon and Huber","architectural_style":"Late 19th century Romanesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and marked altered, on its original site; the top of the tower was gutted by fire and its windows later sealed.
