Broadway in Granville, Licking County, Ohio, built in 1812 by Orrin Granger and originally called The Tavern.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the oldest extant inns in Ohio, with architecture that is essentially original and shows a simple but durable form. It served stagecoach travelers between Worthington and Newark, acted as a village gathering place and mail depot, and hosted many notable visitors. It is on its original site.","narrative":"Built in 1812 by Orrin Granger, this black walnut-clad frame inn at 313 E. Broadway in Granville, Ohio, began life as The Tavern. The L-shaped building originally measured 40 feet across the front and 64 feet deep, with two-story porches. A front wing was added probably before 1818, and a Victorian rear wing followed in 1852, creating an inverted C-shaped courtyard. Later it was known as the Dilley House. The inn served stagecoach travelers on the Worthington-Newark line, hosted village gatherings and handled mail before a post office existed. Visitors included Henry Ward Beecher, Mark Twain, Henry Ford and President McKinley. It is described as one of the oldest surviving inns in Ohio and stands on its original site, with largely original architecture. When nominated in 1972 it was vacant, and the owners planned restoration for a restaurant, guest rooms and shops.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1812)","architect_builder":"Orrin Granger","architectural_style":"Simple Victorian rear wing (1852) added to the original frame inn; Greek Revival porch columns possibly added","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair and altered; the form marks the property as presently vacant, with plans for restoration as a restaurant, guest rooms and shops.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.868597-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/72001029.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001029/09fc1fe9b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001029/09fc1fe9b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buxton_Inn,_Granville,_OH,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buxton_Inn,_Granville,_OH,_US.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80003138","name":"Granville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/granville-historic-district-80003138/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989720","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buxton_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131374871"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/licking-county/buxton-inn-72001029/"}
