It is noted for fine detail and architectural quality that surpass many remaining contemporaries. The house also serves as a focal point on tree-lined Garfield Place.","narrative":"Built in 1861-1862 for Marcus Fechheimer, a native of Stuttgart, Germany, this two-story town house at 22 Garfield Place in downtown Cincinnati is an elaborate Italianate design in sandstone and brick. It has a rectangular plan, a polygonal bay on the east side and a flat roof. The south front is ashlar, carved with rusticated quoins, string courses, a paneled frieze and ornate door and window surrounds. Lower windows carry Corinthian cornices, upper ones segmental pediments, all on carved brackets. A two-story frontispiece of engaged Corinthian columns and pilasters ends in a triangular pediment. A cast iron fence and carved stone posts add to the setting. It was listed as the sole survivor of its nineteenth-century neighbors and a fine example of the grander Italianate town houses of prominent Cincinnatians. It later served as the Cuvier Press Club, and a congressman urged quick listing because a parking lot was planned for the site.","period_of_significance":"1861-1862 (19th Century)","architect_builder":"Marcus Fechheimer (builder/original owner)","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; occupied and used as a club. Later correspondence notes a threat of demolition for a parking lot, and a later grant funded floor restoration work.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.174243-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/72001019.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001019/1379a67a2d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001019/1379a67a2d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CuvierPressClub.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CuvierPressClub.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985486","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuvier_Press_Club_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5197047"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/cuvier-press-club-72001019/"}
