It was probably built around 1780 by Captain Robert Cleveland.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it probably the oldest dwelling in Wilkes County and the home of a well-known Revolutionary soldier who served under his brother Benjamin Cleveland at Kings Mountain. Architecturally, it is described as an extremely important example of early two-pen log construction built by eighteenth-century pioneers in the western mountains.","narrative":"Near Purlear in Wilkes County, North Carolina, this two-pen log house was probably built around 1780 by Captain Robert Cleveland, who had moved from Virginia and settled near the Yadkin River. The hewn logs are joined with splayed dovetails, and a wide roof overhang shelters the joints from rain. Two equal rooms are divided by a log partition, with a loft above and large fieldstone chimneys at each gable. Cleveland served as a company captain in his brother Benjamin's regiment at the Battle of Kings Mountain. His 1812 will left the plantation and his still to his son Presley, who sold the property in 1823 to John Yates. The Yates family held the house for more than a century before Winfield S. Fletcher bought it in 1930 out of interest in its history. The nomination describes it as probably the oldest dwelling in the county and an important example of early pioneer log building.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Captain Robert Cleveland (probable builder)","architectural_style":"Two-pen log dwelling","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as fair, unaltered, on its original site; marked unoccupied and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.889208-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7228/47722835/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72001003.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001003/ffd7016ddf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72001003/ffd7016ddf-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Cleveland_Log_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Cleveland_Log_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"09000290","name":"Downtown Wilkesboro Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/downtown-wilkesboro-historic-district-09000290/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722835","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Cleveland_Log_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20708798"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wilkes-county/cleveland-robert-log-house-72001003/"}
