It recalls the struggles of an early Episcopal congregation served only by occasional missionaries. Its simple, well-proportioned design and fine detail make it an appealing example of the Greek Revival style.","narrative":"Perched on a steep hillside at 702 North Main Street in Rutherfordton, this tiny frame church is three bays wide and two deep, covered in plain lapped siding. Brick piers thirteen feet high support the rear, while the front sits on a low foundation. Its pedimented facade, molded door and window surrounds with roundel corner blocks, and square belfry reflect pure Greek Revival design, apart from a later lancet arch over the door. Most original interior features survive, including curved-back pews. Built for the Episcopal congregation of St. John's, which formed in the 1840s and had a building ready for consecration by 1849, the church endured long gaps without regular services, especially from 1864 to 1873. A larger stone church, St. Francis, replaced it in 1900. The old building passed to a Lutheran synod in 1936 and has been Trinity Lutheran Church since. It is listed for its early date and refined Greek Revival simplicity.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as excellent condition, altered, on its original site, occupied and in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.798604-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/7221/47722188/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000997.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000997/454d32f198-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000997/454d32f198-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"John B.
