It is also distinguished by well-executed Federal details at its entrance and lunettes. The plantation is tied to John Morris, an early settler and Revolutionary-era committee member.","narrative":"Fox Haven is a large two-story brick house in Green Hill township, Rutherford County, North Carolina. According to family tradition, James Morris built it in 1823 on land his father, John Morris, began acquiring in 1769. The house is five bays wide and three deep, laid in Flemish bond on the front and west side and common bond on the east and rear. Its chimneys are placed unusually, with two on the rear wall and one on the south front. The south entrance has a paneled door, transom, half-sidelights and delicate molded trim, and segmental lunettes fill the gable pediments. Inside, a center hall holds a single-flight stair with a plain Federal balustrade, and the rooms have paneled wainscots and varied mantels. The Morris family held the plantation until 1941. It is valued as an interesting example of early nineteenth-century brick building in western North Carolina, notable for its plan and Federal detailing.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"James Morris (built the house per family tradition)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and used as a private residence; occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.86867-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/7221/47722162/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000996.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000996/5cbac95a25-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000996/5cbac95a25-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Upstateherd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fox_Haven_Plantation.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstateherd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fox_Haven_Plantation.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722162","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Haven_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19865911"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/rutherford-county/fox-haven-plantation-72000996/"}
