The lot was also owned by a series of distinguished men, including Spruce Macay, who taught Andrew Jackson and William R. Davie law, and Henderson, a congressman and legislator.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Church and Fisher streets in Salisbury, this small one-story frame building served as the law office of Archibald Henderson, who built it on the southeast corner of his lot sometime after 1796. It has a low hip roof, a Flemish bond foundation, a three-bay front with a transom over the paneled door, and nine-over-nine windows. Inside is a single plastered room with a Federal style mantel and a paneled cupboard that appears original. The lot was part of Salisbury's original town plan and once belonged to Judge Spruce Macay, who trained Andrew Jackson and William R. Davie in the law. Henderson was a Federalist congressman and later a state legislator. The property passed through his descendants until 1952, when it was given to Rowan County. It is considered one of the best preserved examples in North Carolina of the small offices used by lawyers in courthouse towns across the South.","period_of_significance":"Between 1796 and 1818","architect_builder":"Archibald Henderson (built the office)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good and altered; in use for storage by Rowan County, with restoration as a law office under consideration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.590569-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/7221/47722102/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000993.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000993/145954a299-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000993/145954a299-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JoannaSerah","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henderson-Law-Office-SalisburyNC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JoannaSerah</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henderson-Law-Office-SalisburyNC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722102","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_Henderson_Law_Office","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19868066"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/rowan-county/henderson-archibald-law-office-72000993/"}
