It was built before 1730 by Thomas Long or his son.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of only two known gambrel-roof houses with brick ends in North Carolina, and possibly the oldest gambrel dwelling in the state. It is noted for its archaic chimneys and fine interior woodwork. Its shed rooms and rear-wall stair make it a worthy example of a transitional style in the progression to two full stories.","narrative":"Myers-White House, also called Sycamore Grove, is a story-and-a-half frame dwelling near Bethel in Perquimans County. It has a gambrel roof, brick ends, and massive double-shoulder chimneys laid in English bond. Thomas Long or his son built it before 1730 on land purchased in 1694. Later owners included Charles Moore, whose household in 1790 counted eight free persons and fifteen slaves, and Whitaker Myers, a Confederate captain who lived there from 1849 until 1890. Members of the White family have held it since 1897. Inside, two main rooms have plaster walls, flat-paneled wainscot, molded cornices and paneled fireplace overmantels. The enclosed rear stair and original shed rooms illustrate a transitional stage toward two full stories. The nomination describes it as one of two known brick-ended gambrel houses in North Carolina, possibly the oldest gambrel dwelling in the state and one of the oldest in the southeast.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Thomas Long or his son (builder, before 1730)","architectural_style":"Gambrel-roof frame house with brick ends; transitional form toward two full stories","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked good and altered; used as a private residence and occupied at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.800796-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7217/47721740/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000986.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000986/26d1a8c3f7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000986/26d1a8c3f7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cewhite3","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Myers-White_House,_North-West_Corner.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cewhite3</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Myers-White_House,_North-West_Corner.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721740","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-White_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6947411"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/perquimans-county/myers-white-house-72000986/"}
