It was probably raised by John Baptista Ashe, a colonial assemblyman, speaker and royal councilor, sometime between 1726 and 1731. The house has an exceptionally wide gable roof covering both the dwelling and its front porch, large brick end chimneys, and a stuccoed stone basement under the central block. Late eighteenth century shed additions extended the rear. Inside, the Quaker plan arrangement and a full-height Georgian mantel in the main parlor stand out. Ashe's son John, a leader against the Stamp Act and later state treasurer, inherited the property, and it passed through several owners after 1795. The nomination considers it possibly the earliest surviving house in southeastern North Carolina and certainly among the state's oldest frame houses. Its West Indian type porch also reflects adaptation to the coastal climate.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"John Baptista Ashe (probable builder, not certain)","architectural_style":"Quaker plan frame dwelling with Georgian interior woodwork and a West Indian type porch","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.999648-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7217/47721716/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000985.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000985/8bde27b042-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000985/8bde27b042-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sloop_Point_Plantation,_U.S._Route_17,_Holly_Ridge_Vicinity,_Topsail_Beach,_Pender_County,_NC_HABS_NC,71-HOL.V,1-_(sheet_6_of_12).tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sloop_Point_Plantation,_U.S._Route_17,_Holly_Ridge_Vicinity,_Topsail_Beach,_Pender_County,_NC_HABS_NC,71-HOL.V,1-_(sheet_6_of_12).tif"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721716","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloop_Point","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7541327"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/pender-county/sloop-point-72000985/"}
