It has a two-story central block with one-bay flanking wings.","why_significant":"The house is tied to the politically prominent Moore family, notably Alfred Moore, a soldier, state attorney general and U.S. Supreme Court justice. It is also architecturally important as one of the earliest appearances of the Federal style in North Carolina, with well-executed mantels and a fine Chinese Chippendale stair.","narrative":"Moorefields is a small Federal country house west of Hillsborough, built in 1785 by Alfred Moore while he served as North Carolina's attorney general. The two-story central block is three bays wide and flanked by one-bay wings, all covered in molded weatherboards. Inside, a side hall holds a closed-string stair with a Chinese Chippendale balustrade, and the parlor has a mantel regarded as one of the earliest expressions of Federal design in the Piedmont. Moore, a Revolutionary War officer and judge, later served on the state supreme court and then the United States Supreme Court from 1799 to 1804. He left the house to his son Alfred, a legislator and speaker of the House of Commons, and it stayed in the family until a public sale was advertised in 1913. Restoration began in 1949, and the house is now in excellent condition. It is valued both for its Moore family associations and its early Federal architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Alfred Moore (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition after restoration begun in 1949; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.835186-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7216/47721650/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000982.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000982/d828b0e6de-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000982/d828b0e6de-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jack Boucher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Moorefields,_State_Route_1135,_Hillsborough_(Orange_County,_North_Carolina).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Boucher</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Moorefields,_State_Route_1135,_Hillsborough_(Orange_County,_North_Carolina).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721650","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorefields","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19817694"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/orange-county/moorefields-72000982/"}
