Its history reflects the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Farmers' State Alliance headquarters era, and the Depression.","narrative":"Built about 1860 on Barracks Road in Hillsborough, this two-story brick house with corner turrets and crenellated battlements was home to the superintendent of the Hillsborough Military Academy. Charles C. Tew, a Citadel graduate, bought the land in 1858 and founded the school, modeled on the Citadel. The academy trained cadets during the Civil War and operated afterward under General R. C. Colston and later under Paul C. Cameron. In 1895 the property became headquarters of the Farmers' State Alliance, whose secretary-treasurer lived in the house. After the 1920 sale, the large Barracks building sat empty, housed homeless families during the Depression, and was torn down in 1938. The house survived as the only major remnant of the academy. Its brick walls are laid in common bond with Flemish variation, and its center-hall interior retains original mantels. It is in excellent condition and remains a private residence.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date c. 1860)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival castellated","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.44119-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/7216/47721610/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000981.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000981/905afac947-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000981/905afac947-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:COMMANDANT%27S_HOUSE,_HILLSBOROUGH,_ORANGE_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721610","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Polytechnic_Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17039843"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/orange-county/commandants-house-72000981/"}
