It faces its companion, Eumenean Hall, and the two were planned to be alike in size, material and magnificence, completing the original open quadrangle of the campus. Each has a pedimented tetrastyle portico, giving the grounds an appearance compared to Thomas Jefferson's quadrangle at the University of Virginia. The hall's main floor holds one large room with classical plasterwork and a French-made crystal chandelier that was exhibited in New York in 1853. For most of the nineteenth century, the two societies served as debating groups and regulated student conduct, effectively acting as the early student government. They also kept libraries and paid for commencement events. The society still meets in the hall, and the building is regarded as a fine example of Greek Revival design and a primary campus landmark.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered; the society has used the hall continuously for its original purpose, and the building was restored and remodeled in 1956 with the basement converted to offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.274104-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/8/7213/47721308/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000975.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000975/99b052ed23-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000975/99b052ed23-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Dacoslett","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Philanthropic_Hall,_Davidson_College_(Davidson,_NC).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dacoslett</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Philanthropic_Hall,_Davidson_College_(Davidson,_NC).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721308","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philanthropic_Hall,_Davidson_College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19817704"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/philanthropic-hall-davidson-college-72000975/"}
