Surviving interior features such as the locks, the wood-graining and marbleizing, and the numerous early outbuildings add to its significance.","narrative":"Set among large trees in the flat farmland of Hertford County, this two-story frame farmhouse was built by William W. Mitchell, probably around 1832. The L-shaped dwelling has traditional Federal proportions combined with simple Greek Revival details, including a pedimented entrance porch, nine-over-nine windows and a center-passage plan. Inside, the main rooms have varied molded door and window frames, wainscoting, and carpenter locks. Upstairs, original wood-graining and spatter-style marbleizing survive on mantels and doors. An office, schoolhouse, carriage house and smokehouse stand nearby. Mitchell was a devout Baptist and a supporter of education who helped found Chowan Female Institute in 1848, served as chairman of its board of trustees, and in 1868 led a group of stockholders who bought the school during a financial crisis. It later became Chowan College. The house stayed in his family after his death in 1897 and has been carefully restored.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"William W.
