It is notable for its vernacular detailing, especially an unusual heavy main stair. The gambrel-roof kitchen is described as perhaps the only one of its kind in North Carolina.","narrative":"Elmwood Plantation, near Gatesville in Gates County, is a rural Federal-style house built about 1822 by David Parker, son of early county settler Joseph Parker. The side-hall dwelling has beaded weatherboards, a modillion cornice, and a large sunburst lunette in the north gable. Inside, a transverse arch with reeded pilasters divides the hall, and a heavy, vernacular main stair rises in four flights with wave brackets on the treads. A two-story wing at the rear repeats the main block's details. Behind the house stands a small gambrel-roof kitchen with a massive brick chimney and a brick potato house, thought to be the only one of its kind in North Carolina. Parker's holdings grew from 235 acres in 1822 to 685 acres by 1855. His son James Parker, a state senator and university trustee, later farmed the property. The house has remained largely unaltered apart from a twentieth-century front porch.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"David Parker","architectural_style":"Federal side-hall plan (rural vernacular)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; altered only by a twentieth-century front shed porch; occupied as a private residence, with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.422749-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7204/47720433/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000963.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000963/4ee3058960-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000963/4ee3058960-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmwood_Plantation_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmwood_Plantation_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720433","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmwood_Plantation","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711562"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/gates-county/elmwood-plantation-72000963/"}
