Local tradition and deed records suggest Duncan MacLeran built it around 1804, after buying the land in 1797. The house has a gable roof, beaded weatherboards, a five-bay front with a pedimented porch, a fanlight over the main door, and pedimented dormers. Inside, rooms are arranged around a large central chimney and carry delicate vernacular ornament, including pierced-rectangle and incised cornices, reeded trim and Adam-style mantels. The rear hall holds a partially enclosed barrel stair that is probably unique in the state. The house is considered a fine example of Upper Cape Fear River architecture and is one of the few Fayetteville buildings that predate the fire of 1831. The Fayetteville Woman's Club bought it in 1966 as the first step in creating Heritage Square.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Duncan MacLeran (thought to have built the house)","architectural_style":"Upper Cape Fear River architecture; vernacular with Federal and Adam-style details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered, on its original site; owned by the Fayetteville Woman's Club as part of Heritage Square, with the present use marked as museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.316987-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/7198/47719812/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000958.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000958/d9d174fefa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000958/d9d174fefa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Kelliejojo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baker-Haigh-Nimocks-House-Heritage-Square-Fayetteville-NC.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelliejojo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Baker-Haigh-Nimocks-House-Heritage-Square-Fayetteville-NC.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000779","name":"Fayetteville Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/fayetteville-downtown-historic-district-99000779/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719812","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimocks_House_(Fayetteville,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137563225"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cumberland-county/nimocks-house-72000958/"}
