It has also served continuously as the county courthouse since 1847.","narrative":"Camden County Courthouse is a small brick government building on Highway 343 in Camden, North Carolina. Dated 1847 on a wooden plaque in its pediment, it replaced an earlier courthouse on the same one-and-a-quarter-acre site, bought in 1782, that burned about 1846. The building has a hip roof, a raised basement and a main floor set above it. Its front and visible sides are laid in Flemish bond, while the rear uses a plainer random bond. A tetrastyle pedimented portico with tapered Doric columns of stuccoed molded brick dominates the east facade. Inside, the basement holds county offices around a center hall, and the main floor is a single courtroom with a Victorian turned balustrade around the judge's bench. The county was formed in 1777 and named for Sir Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden. The courthouse is valued as a modest Greek Revival design with unusual dignity and scale for such a small county, and it has remained in continuous use.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (1847)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, on its original site, occupied and in government use; it has served as the courthouse continuously since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.902987-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/7/7194/47719407/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000928.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000928/90af1d3da4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000928/90af1d3da4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Thomas T.
