Its long tree-lined approach and riverside setting are described as conveying the romanticised ideal of the Old South. It is also tied to Thomas Brown, a Revolutionary-era militia leader against Bladen County Tories.","narrative":"Oakland is a two-story brick plantation house on a high bluff overlooking the Cape Fear River near Carvers in Bladen County. General Thomas Brown, a militia officer who helped suppress the Tory faction during the Revolution, built it probably about 1780 on land passed down from the Bartram family. The house is laid in Flemish bond, six bays wide, with a high brick basement and full-height porches that are twentieth-century replacements. Inside, an unusual plan places a through hall beside a large parlor with the finest late Georgian woodwork, including a dentil cornice and a pilastered overmantel. A long avenue of cedars and old hardwoods leads to a four-acre yard of magnolias and live oaks hung with Spanish moss, and lawns run down to the river. The property remained in the Brown family for generations. It was recognized as a well-preserved post-Revolutionary house and as a vivid example of the Old South plantation setting.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"General Thomas Brown (builder)","architectural_style":"Late Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and altered, on its original site; the form records it as a private residence.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.654185-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/7190/47719081/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000924.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000924/6e45944be0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000924/6e45944be0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oakland,_Cape_Fear_River_%26_Route_21,_Elizabethtown_vicinity_(Bladen_County,_North_Carolina).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oakland,_Cape_Fear_River_%26_Route_21,_Elizabethtown_vicinity_(Bladen_County,_North_Carolina).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719081","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Plantation_(Carvers,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7074039"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/bladen-county/oakland-plantation-72000924/"}
