It is listed under architecture and is typical of small mountain farm dwellings of North Carolina.","narrative":"Brinegar Cabin is a small log farmhouse beside the Blue Ridge Parkway near Whitehead in Alleghany County, North Carolina. It is a one-story building covered with lapped siding, set on an uncoursed fieldstone foundation and topped by a gable roof that still carries early wooden shingles. A large stone chimney stands at the south end, and a shed addition at the rear holds a second room. A frame outbuilding with a stone basement, probably a dairy, stands to the northwest. About 1880 Martin Brinegar and his bride, Caroline Joines, settled on the farm at 3,500 feet, and he spent five years completing the cabin and outbuildings, largely by himself. He also worked as a cobbler. His widow lived there until about a decade after his death in 1925, when the state bought it and later gave it to the federal government. It is valued as a well-preserved example of a long-lived mountain building type, and it now displays mountain crafts and weaving.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Martin Brinegar","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is stated as excellent, unaltered and on its original site; it currently houses a display of mountain crafts and weaving and is a museum under National Park Service ownership.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.873598-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7189/47718916/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/72000922.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000922/d50fcb84c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000922/d50fcb84c9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Acroterion","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brinegar_Cabinb_BRP_NC1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Acroterion</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brinegar_Cabinb_BRP_NC1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718916","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brinegar_Cabin","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17512051"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/alleghany-county/brinegar-cabin-72000922/"}
