It has two stories, a central chimney, shingled walls and a long rear roof slope. The oldest section measures 16 by 31 feet. A one-story wing was added in 1804, and the Greek Revival door and porch pillars date from about 1830. New York State granted Paine the 277-acre farm in 1784, and he lived in the cottage from 1802 until 1806. He was buried on the farm in 1809. In 1908, as the farmland was divided into residential lots, the cottage was moved about a quarter mile to its present corner of the old farm. Wide floorboards, plaster walls and chair rails survive from the original house. Nearby are an 1839 monument to Paine and a stone memorial building of 1925. The cottage is open to visitors as a historic house exhibit.","period_of_significance":"1784-1809","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Salt-box type with Greek Revival porch and door details added about 1830","criteria":[],"status_note":"Altered and moved; open to visitors as a historic house exhibit, with the wing used as a caretaker's apartment.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.662597-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000920_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000920/6fe1fba9ef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000920/6fe1fba9ef-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ɱ","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:01_2015_Paine_Cottage.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Ɱ</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:01_2015_Paine_Cottage.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316134","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7792975"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/paine-thomas-cottage-72000920/"}
