Its granite walls were laid with very little mortar thanks to the skill of the masons. It also forms part of the oldest continually manned military position in the United States, together with Fort Wadsworth.","narrative":"Battery Weed is a granite fort on the shore of the Narrows at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. Begun in 1847 after the site passed from New York State to federal control, it was completed in fourteen years, and troops first garrisoned it on August 8, 1861. The fort is a trapezoid with walls of solid granite slabs up to six feet thick at the sea wall. Three sides face an inner courtyard and rise three stories, framed by tiers of segmental arches forming galleries, with octagonal stair towers in the corners. A two-story gatehouse sits at the center of the low land-side wall. Masons cut and set the blocks so precisely that little mortar was needed. In 1862 the fort mounted between 140 and 150 cannon. It was named for Brigadier General Stephen H. Weed, killed at Gettysburg. Together with Fort Wadsworth, it forms what the nomination calls the oldest continually manned military position in the United States.","period_of_significance":"1847-1861","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent and unaltered, on its original site; ownership is listed as the US Department of Defense and present use as military.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:40.118936-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000908.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000908/6a63657644-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000908/6a63657644-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Battery_Weed_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Battery_Weed_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321329","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Weed","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2178916"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/staten-island/battery-weed-72000908/"}
