Built in 1862, it has painted cream walls with dark brown trim, arched paired windows, thin buttresses between the bays, and a triple-arched portico above a raised platform at the front entrance. A small cell block was added at the rear in 1938, and pressed metal ceilings were installed before 1900. The building is regarded as a representative example of the picturesque small town hall of the years just before the Civil War. From 1862 to 1900 it hosted community meetings, fancy dress balls, and small opera productions, and Tom Thumb performed there. Flushing's volunteer artillery unit, later the 34th Independent N.Y. Battery, was housed there during the Civil War. It later served as a courthouse, municipal offices, and a police precinct during the 1964-65 World's Fair. The City owns it, and it was temporarily unoccupied at the time of listing.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1862)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Picturesque architecture popular just prior to the Civil War","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the City of New York and described as temporarily unoccupied; condition marked excellent.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.998969-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000904.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000904/d5517fd88e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000904/d5517fd88e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"MyName (Jim.henderson (talk))","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flushing_Town_Hall_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">MyName (Jim.henderson (talk))</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flushing_Town_Hall_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321084","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flushing_Town_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8564089"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/queens/flushing-town-hall-72000904/"}
