The attack opened the way for a 20-day raid that destroyed American defenses along the Hudson. The site has extensive unaltered ruins in an unimpaired setting.","narrative":"Fort Montgomery is the site of an American Revolutionary War fortress on a 100-foot height above the west shore of the Hudson River, north of Popolopen Creek in what is now Bear Mountain State Park. Built between January 1776 and October 1777, it formed a pair with Fort Clinton across the creek, guarding a great iron chain stretched over the river. On October 6, 1777, Sir Henry Clinton's troops stormed both forts, capturing 263 Americans and 67 cannon. The victory let the British cut the chain and raid upriver for twenty days, destroying Continental defenses and burning Kingston. Today the earthen walls remain, including a redoubt added by Rufus Putnam in 1779. Archeologists have uncovered brick foundations of barracks, storehouses and a bake house. Unlike Fort Clinton, which was disturbed by a bridge approach and museums, Fort Montgomery lies in forest, largely unaltered apart from a highway crossing its western section.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (October 6, 1777; 1776-77)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Ruins in heavy forest, unmarked and not yet open to visitors; archeological work in progress, and the State plans to preserve and interpret it.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.466514-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000897_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000897/50442b8049-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000897/50442b8049-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cannons_at_Fort_Montgomery_site,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cannons_at_Fort_Montgomery_site,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316008","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Montgomery_(Hudson_River)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1438627"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/fort-montgomery-site-72000897/"}
