It also has military significance as the long-time residence of Army commanders on Governors Island, later the home of the Coast Guard's resident admiral.","narrative":"Admiral's House is a two-story brick residence on Governors Island in New York Harbor, completed in 1840. Built in the Federal tradition, it has walls of brick with stone trim, a pitched gable roof, dentiled wood cornices and six plain chimneys. Two-story Doric verandas with slender columns and wood balustrades face east and west. Because the house sits on sloping ground, the rear veranda rests on a brick loggia with round-arched openings, and a sweeping double staircase with a delicate iron railing leads down to the garden. The wide front door has leaded sidelights and a transom, framed by pilasters with acanthus capitals. The house was valued for its elegant proportions and simple, refined detail. For more than a century it served as the residence of United States Army commanders on the island. After the Army turned the island over to the Coast Guard in 1966, it became the home of the resident admiral.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (completed 1840)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered on its original site; maintained as the home of the resident Coast Guard admiral.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.038426-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000860.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000860/12b5837926-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000860/12b5837926-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Admirals-house-governors-island.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Admirals-house-governors-island.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85002435","name":"Governors Island","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/governors-island-85002435/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319239","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admiral%27s_House_(Governors_Island)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4683626"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/admirals-house-72000860/"}
