It is also physical evidence of how the naval and military activity of the War of 1812 shaped the village. It is the only remaining large hotel building in Sackets Harbor.","narrative":"Facing Market Square at Main and Ray Streets, this three-and-a-half-story limestone building was constructed in 1817-1818 as a hotel in Sackets Harbor. Owner Frederick White, reputed to be the wealthiest man in Jefferson County, built it to serve the growing village, which had become a naval and military center during the War of 1812. The walls are coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and belt courses, and the roof was later changed from its original crow-stepped gables to a gabled form. Inside, a central hall plan, spacious rooms and bold vernacular Federal woodwork, including a fanlight doorway and carved mantels, are notable. The building was known as the Union Hotel, Mansion House and Barrow's Hotel. By 1864 it no longer operated as a hotel, and the Masons bought it in 1865 and used it as a lodge for many years. It is the only large hotel left in the village, and the state planned to convert it into a battlefield visitor's center.","period_of_significance":"1817-1818","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (vernacular Federal woodwork, central hall plan)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and in good condition; the State of New York planned to buy it for use as an interpretive and visitor's center for the Sackets Harbor Battlefield.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:40.108337-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000849.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000849/b43c0499e2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000849/b43c0499e2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Union_Hotel_Sacketts_Harbor_Aug_08.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Union_Hotel_Sacketts_Harbor_Aug_08.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83001683","name":"Sackets Harbor Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/sackets-harbor-village-historic-district-83001683/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318292","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Hotel_(Sackets_Harbor,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7885772"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/union-hotel-72000849/"}
