It is tied to early families, including the Stoutenburghs, who were prominent in settling the community once called Stoutenburgh. It is also described as the only remaining building of its type in the village of Hyde Park.","narrative":"This one-story stone house sits parallel to the old New York-Albany Post Road, now U.S. Route 9, in Hyde Park. The original section has five bays across the front and two on each side, with uncoursed fieldstone bearing walls, clapboarded gables and a slate gambrel roof. Two interior end chimneys serve it, a small wood porch shelters the central door, and an arched doorway of vertically laid stone blocks leads to the cellar. Original mantels and a staircase survive, and two frame additions adjoin the east and north sides. Before the Revolution, Christian Bergh divided his land between his son John and son-in-law Martin Dop, and both built houses shown on Robert Erskine's 1778-1780 map of the Albany Post Road. John Bergh occupied this one until selling about one hundred acres to Jacobus Stoutenburgh in 1788. It has served continuously as a residence and is the last building of its type in the village.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Hudson Valley stone dwelling (gambrel-roofed fieldstone house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; in continuous use as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.842031-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000829.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000829/bc059a7850-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000829/bc059a7850-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bergh-Stoutenburgh_House,_angular_view_2013.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bergh-Stoutenburgh_House,_angular_view_2013.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317301","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bergh%E2%80%93Stoutenburgh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4891643"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/bergh-stoutenburgh-house-72000829/"}
