It is an American board-and-batten adaptation of the English medieval parish church, and it remains largely unaltered. It was also founded by textile mill owners and workers in Stockport.","narrative":"Set among trees on Columbia County Route 25 in Stockport, this small Episcopal church was built in 1845-46 for a parish founded by owners and workers of the local textile mills. Its board-and-batten walls, steep shingled gable roofs, buttressed entrance tower with a battlemented parapet, and lancet windows are typical of Carpenter's Gothic. Inside, a hammerbeam ceiling with carved tie-beams and maple panelling shelters stained glass with oak leaf and grapevine motifs. Tradition says the plans came from England, but the nomination finds few similarities with the church of St. Mary in Stockport, England, and describes the building as an American adaptation of a medieval parish church. The architect is unknown. Joseph Marshall, a founder of the Hudson Print Works, helped supervise construction, and the church was dedicated in July 1846. Once called the Little Brown Church, it remains largely unchanged, with only a replaced organ and a later chimney, and still has its small graveyard.","period_of_significance":"1845-46","architect_builder":"Architect unknown; construction supervised by Joseph Marshall, Thomas Marshall and Cornelius Welch","architectural_style":"Carpenter's Gothic / Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, occupied and in religious use; the organ was replaced and a non-original chimney added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.62489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/72000827.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000827/2ca35aba40-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000827/2ca35aba40-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_of_St._John_the_Evangelist_Stockport_NY_Jan_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_of_St._John_the_Evangelist_Stockport_NY_Jan_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316964","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_St._John_the_Evangelist_(Stockport,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5117260"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/church-of-st-john-the-evangelist-72000827/"}
