It was built sometime after 1716 and before 1723 by Ariaanje Coeymans and her brother Samuel.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant for its blend of architectural, historical and archeological features. Its large size and fine details set it apart from the usual one-and-a-half-story Dutch country houses of Albany County. It reflects the milling fortune of the Coeymans family, and the surrounding land holds potential archeological sites of mills and outbuildings tied to colonial and Revolutionary-era industry, trade and military activity.","narrative":"Close to the Hudson River and just north of Coeymans Creek, this large Dutch colonial house in Coeymans was built by Ariaanje Coeymans and her brother Samuel between 1716 and 1723. Its walls are stone up to the cornice and brick beneath the gable, and the river side rises three and a half stories because of the sloping site. Ariaanje was the daughter of Barent Coeymans, a miller who rose from poverty to own a patent of land twelve miles square south of Albany. Alterations around 1780 added a link to a wing and replaced the steep Dutch roof with a gambrel roof. The house stayed in family hands through the nineteenth century, later becoming a tenement for brickworks laborers. It is recognized for its exceptional size and quality of detail among local Dutch houses, and for the surrounding land, where mills and outbuildings once stood and which may hold archeological evidence of colonial milling, shipbuilding and Revolutionary War activity.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (c. 1716)","architect_builder":"Ariaanje Coeymans and her brother Samuel (built the house)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in fair condition and altered, on its original site; the main rooms are being restored to their former size after being partitioned into apartments, and the frame link section is boarded up.
