Harry Stillwell Edwards, a noted Macon writer, was postmaster during its construction.","narrative":"Built between 1905 and 1908 on Mulberry Street in downtown Macon, this three-story marble building, with a basement, was designed to hold the post office and federal offices. Georgia marble covers the exterior in a Roman-Ionic style, with a rusticated base, a triangular pediment carried by four pairs of double Ionic columns, and a balustrade around three sides of the roof. James Knox Taylor was the supervisory architect, and the Mankin Construction Company of Richmond, Virginia, broke ground in September 1905. Postal operations began in August 1908. A rear wing added in 1917 provided more federal office space. Originally the post office occupied the first floor, with a federal court room and judges' offices on the second and the U.S. marshal and a weather bureau room on the third. It replaced an 1886 courthouse and post office on the same site. Writer Harry Stillwell Edwards served as postmaster during construction. The building is valued as a Macon landmark of notable architectural merit.","period_of_significance":"1908","architect_builder":"James Knox Taylor (supervisory architect); Mankin Construction Company of Richmond, Virginia (contractor)","architectural_style":"Roman-Ionic","criteria":[],"status_note":"The form states the building still houses Federal Courts and other activities; the main Post Office operation moved to a new Federal Building in 1964.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.521458-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/72000370.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000370/9811d9d22d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000370/9811d9d22d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_U.S._Post_Office_and_Federal_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_U.S._Post_Office_and_Federal_Building.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74000658","name":"Macon Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/macon-historic-district-74000658/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207077","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Augustus_Bootle_Federal_Building_and_United_States_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7085346"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bibb-county/old-u-s-post-office-and-federal-building-72000370/"}
