Its Italianesque Victorian front is marked by a full-width cast iron balcony on scroll brackets, molded cast iron window lintels, and a bracketed metal cornice. Inside, a graceful stair with turned mahogany balusters rises to the third floor, and some original pine chimney pieces survive. The ground floor has been heavily altered and lowered, but the upper floors remain largely intact. During the Civil War the building served as headquarters of the Army of Georgia Reserves from April 1864, commanded by Major General Howell Cobb, and from July 22, 1864 of all Georgia militia. After Lee's surrender, Union Major General Wilson used it as his headquarters in Macon. Its facade also helps define the character of Mulberry Street's historic 500 block.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Bostick and Kein","architectural_style":"Italianesque Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition but altered; at the time of nomination the whole building was occupied by a single tenant, an office equipment company, with the third floor neglected and used for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.731163-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/72000367.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74000658","name":"Macon Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/macon-historic-district-74000658/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207059","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia_Headquarters_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16895127"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bibb-county/militia-headquarters-building-72000367/"}
