The house is one of three built to the same design in Northern California in the early 1850s and the best of the two that remain. Its ornamental grounds, storehouse, reservoir and agricultural history add to its importance.","narrative":"Lachryma Montis is the Sonoma estate of Mariano Vallejo and his wife, Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo, developed from 1849 onward around a flowing artesian spring. The main house, built about 1852-53, is a framed redwood dwelling with adobe bricks placed in the walls for insulation, a steep shingled roof, dormers, a large pointed window in the front gable and prominent masonry chimneys. To the east stands a two-story storehouse known as the Swiss Chalet, built of prefabricated European materials and restored about 1940. A kitchen, cabin and latticed summerhouse also survive. The grounds once held orchards, vineyards and gardens, and the estate's wines, brandy and fruit won awards at agricultural fairs. The reservoir fed by the spring supplied Sonoma with water for decades. The house is one of three of its design built in Northern California in the early 1850s and the best of two remaining. The state received 17 acres of the estate in 1933, and additional land was proposed to protect its setting.","period_of_significance":"1849-1890","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Atlantic Seaboard dwelling of the early 1850s, with steep shingled roof and dormer windows","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated fair and unaltered on the original site; about 25 acres were in state park ownership in 1970, with the storehouse's ground floor used as a museum.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.774333-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/72000262.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000262/813822eb96-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000262/813822eb96-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vallejo_Estate,_Spain_and_W._3rd_Sts.,_Sonoma,_CA_6-12-2010_3-43-35_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vallejo_Estate,_Spain_and_W._3rd_Sts.,_Sonoma,_CA_6-12-2010_3-43-35_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123862146","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallejo_Estate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7911919"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sonoma-county/vallejo-estate-72000262/"}
