It was finished in time for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. It is also cited as an outstanding example of Spanish or Mission Revival railway architecture, and as a contributor to downtown San Diego's urban fabric.","narrative":"Completed in 1915 at 1050 Kettner in San Diego, this railway depot was designed by the San Francisco architects Bakewell & Brown in a Spanish Colonial or Mission Revival style. A great arch flanked by twin towers with colorful tiled domes marks the exterior, and the roofs are covered in Mission tile. Inside, the waiting room has nine arched elements, redwood beam ceilings, tile wainscoting, original clay tile floors, oak benches and bronze and glass chandeliers. The depot was rushed to completion for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and represents San Diego's struggle to become the western terminus of the continental railway. The Historic American Buildings Survey recorded it in 1971 and called it an outstanding example of railway station architecture and a handsome example of the Spanish Revival style. It was also designated a city historical site in 1972, and it contributes to the character of downtown San Diego.","period_of_significance":"20th Century (construction completed 31 December 1915)","architect_builder":"Bakewell & Brown of San Francisco","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial / Mission Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent with minor alterations, on its original site, and occupied.
