He and his wife summered here from 1923 until his death in 1941, working on legal cases while living simply. The house and its setting remain little changed.","narrative":"Set at the end of a sandy road near the Oyster River, southwest of Chatham, this shingled Cape Cod house was the summer home of Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. The main block, apparently built in the early 19th century, has a symmetrical five-bay facade, a steep roof, a central chimney and six-over-six windows with blue louvered blinds. A tall hedge planted in Brandeis's lifetime screens it from the approach. Later additions include shed dormers, a rear kitchen wing and a rear outbuilding with guest rooms. Brandeis and his wife first visited Chatham in 1922 and bought the property the next year, returning each summer for the rest of their lives. He kept working on legal cases there while living plainly, and visitors came to seek his advice. Brandeis was a Progressive reformer and a Supreme Court Justice whose dissents later shaped American law. The house has seen little change, and his descendants still use it.","period_of_significance":"1922 - 1941","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Cape Cod architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good, occupied, and used as a private residence by Brandeis's descendants; the house has had only minimal structural change.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.634578-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7936/63793633/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/72000148_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000148/4ac0b2dd6e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000148/4ac0b2dd6e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"NPS photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Louis_Brandeis_House,_Chatham_(Barnstable_County,_Massachusetts).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">NPS photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Louis_Brandeis_House,_Chatham_(Barnstable_County,_Massachusetts).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793633","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Brandeis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6686787"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/brandeis-louis-house-72000148/"}
