It is one of the two oldest mills in Lawrence and remains practically unaltered. Inventions and training of mechanical engineers associated with the shop add to its importance.","narrative":"Built in 1846-48 on Union Street in Lawrence, this three-story ashlar fieldstone building began as the Essex Company's machine shop, making tools, mill machinery, water turbines and millwork for the new textile factories. Its ochre stone walls, steep roof, outside stair towers, wide friezes, quoins and unusual globe-patterned circular gable windows set it apart from other mills of its era. Later, the Lawrence Machine Shop Company added steam locomotives, and the shop is credited with the invention and perfection of the Hoadley portable steam engine, the McKay sewing machine and the first steam fire engine. After the 1857 depression it was sold to the Everett Mills Corporation and used for textile production until 1929. It is now overshadowed by the large Everett mill of 1909-1910 but remains almost unaltered, preserving a rare example of early industrial architecture in the Merrimack Valley, and it now accommodates small industries.","period_of_significance":"1846-48","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered on its original site; it currently houses a variety of small industries.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.757067-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7948/63794876/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/72000138.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000138/faf16410c0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/72000138/faf16410c0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"EraserGirl","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Essex_Company_Machine_Shop,_Lawrence,_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">EraserGirl</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Essex_Company_Machine_Shop,_Lawrence,_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001942","name":"Mechanics Block Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/mechanics-block-historic-district-73001942/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794876","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex_Company_Machine_Shop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5399669"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/essex-company-machine-shop-72000138/"}
