Its Greek Revival steeple, often wrongly called the Christopher Wren tower, and the trompe l'oeil egg tempera murals by Carl Wendte are its most significant features. The 1850 organ, the oldest on Cape Cod, adds to its importance.","narrative":"Set back from Commercial Street in Provincetown and now surrounded by later buildings, this white clapboard church was begun in 1847 for a growing Universalist congregation. Ship's carpenters built it under the supervision of Benjamin Hallet of Barnstable, using a small Fall River church of 1845 as the model for everything except the tower. Only the entrance and auditorium were finished in 1847, and the rest was completed in the 1860s. Giant pilasters, a blank pediment and a three-stage steeple give the exterior its Greek Revival character. Inside, the auditorium is covered with trompe l'oeil murals in egg tempera by the young German artist Carl Wendte, including an illusionary apse and a painted coffered dome. The 1850 organ is the oldest on Cape Cod, and the original chandelier holds Sandwich Glass parts. Local sources call it the oldest building on the Lower Cape still in original form and use.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1847)","architect_builder":"Built by ship's carpenters under the supervision of Benjamin Hallet of Barnstable; murals by Carl Wendte","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in use for religious purposes; condition rated good on the form and later reported by the state as changed to fair.
