Hardin William Reynolds built it beginning in 1843.","why_significant":"It was the birthplace of the sixteen Reynolds children, including Richard Joshua Reynolds, founder of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The complex is preserved as a typical plantation of its era and as a memorial to a family central to the growth of the tobacco industry. The house also shows a country builder's take on Greek Revival style, with notable painted interiors.","narrative":"Reynolds Homestead, also known as Rock Spring Plantation, is a brick plantation house with surviving outbuildings near Critz in Patrick County, Virginia. Hardin William Reynolds built it from 1843 on land inherited from his father, Abraham Reynolds. The dwelling went up in two stages: a single-room, two-story section first, then a central-hall addition that tripled its size and gave it a hipped roof. A brick kitchen, log granary, ice house and milk house complete the farm complex, most of it likely standing before 1855. Its plastered brick portico with Doric and Ionic columns suggests Greek Revival style, while the interiors show paneling, a latticed stair and period grained and marbled paintwork. Sixteen Reynolds children were born here, among them Richard Joshua Reynolds, founder of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Seven acres, including the house, outbuildings and family cemetery, were kept as a museum of plantation life after the rest of the land went to a research center. The house was restored to its ante bellum appearance.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Hardin William Reynolds (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival influence, in the manner of a country builder","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored to its ante bellum appearance, in excellent condition, occupied, and open as a museum of mid-19th-century plantation life.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.800506-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6824/41682450/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/71000987.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000987/1a372987af-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000987/1a372987af-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"MarmadukePercy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reynolds_Homestead_historic_marker_Patrick_County_Virginia.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">MarmadukePercy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Reynolds_Homestead_historic_marker_Patrick_County_Virginia.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682450","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynolds_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7319648"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/patrick-county/reynolds-homestead-71000987/"}
