It was the second church on the site and is described as the oldest house of worship in continuous use by Lutherans in the New World. German Lutheran families settled the Robinson River Valley in 1725, formed the Hebron congregation, and began worship in 1726 in a rough German Chapel. Around 1800 a south wing was added, giving the building a T shape and housing a gallery with an organ built by David Tannenburg of Lititz, Pennsylvania. The organ has been in continuous use and remains almost completely unaltered. The church was remodelled in 1850, painted with Victorian frescoes in 1885, and renovated in 1961, when a narthex and vestry were added. Much of the original framing, roof trusses and galleries survives. It is one of the few remaining frame colonial churches in Virginia, set on a rise with a cemetery to the south.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (specific date 1740)","architect_builder":"David Tannenburg of Lititz, Pennsylvania (organ builder); Guiseppe Oddenino (1885 fresco decoration)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, altered, on its original site, and occupied, with religious use.
