It also notes the survival of nearly all its original fabric, its ties to prominent local families, and its status as one of Goochland County's most familiar landmarks.","narrative":"Woodlawn is a two-story, five-bay brick house on the north side of Route 250 near Oilville, in Goochland County. It was probably built around 1790 by Elisha Leake, a Revolutionary War captain and prominent miller; a mantel carved with three millstones reflects that trade. The house has Flemish bond brickwork, dentilled cornices, stuccoed jack arches over the windows, and two-story pent closets built into the paired end chimneys, an unusual feature. Inside, a central hall is flanked by two rooms on each side, and nearly all the original woodwork survives. After Leake's death the house served as Trevillian's Tavern, shown on an 1820 county map. It later belonged to Colonel Thomas Taylor, noted for raising the American flag at Chapultepec Castle, and remained in the Taylor family until 1937, when it was sold and restored. Its Federalist design, surviving original fabric and prominent roadside position made it a well-known Goochland County landmark.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (c. 1790)","architect_builder":"Probably Elisha Leake (1739-1806)","architectural_style":"Federalist","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, expertly restored in 1937, and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.571962-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/6809/41680977/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/71000978.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000978/dfddbca4d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000978/dfddbca4d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jscott","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jscott</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Woodlawn_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680977","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlawn_(Oilville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713561"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/goochland-county/woodlawn-71000978/"}
