It has sophisticated brickwork, unusual glazed-brick chimneys believed to be a unique survival, and almost fully intact original interior woodwork. Its history is also documented by family papers found in a hidden compartment.","narrative":"Brooke's Bank is a brick plantation house overlooking the Rappahannock River near Loretto in Essex County, Virginia. Mrs. Sarah Taliaferro Brooke supervised its construction and moved in when it was finished in 1751, on land inherited from her husband William Brooke. She also managed the plantation and operated a ferry linking Essex County with Leedstown. The house is small for its type but refined, with Flemish bond walls, rubbed and gauged brickwork, a modillion cornice and tall chimneys decorated with glazed lozenge patterns believed to be unique. Inside, the original woodwork survives almost intact, including an elliptical arch framing the stair, a paneled parlor chimney piece and a built-in cupboard with a concealed compartment. During the Civil War a Union gunboat shelled the house, and the compartment opened to reveal family papers hidden since the mid-eighteenth century. After years of abandonment, it was restored in the 1930s and remains in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Built under the supervision of Mrs. Sarah Taliaferro Brooke","architectural_style":"Mid-Georgian Tidewater Virginia plantation house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Stated to be in excellent condition after careful repair, following years of vacancy and neglect; used as a private residence and occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.793855-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/6804/41680449/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/71000976.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000976/5abe5bb6ac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000976/5abe5bb6ac-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brooke%27s_Bank,_U.S._Route_17_vicinity,_Loretto_vicinity_(Essex_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brooke%27s_Bank,_U.S._Route_17_vicinity,_Loretto_vicinity_(Essex_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005837","name":"Occupacia-Rappahannock Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/occupacia-rappahannock-rural-historic-district-100005837/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680449","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooke%27s_Bank","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712086"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/essex-county/brookes-bank-71000976/"}
