It is unusual for gables covered in mosaic of bright glass and pottery chips, and for its tower, Romanesque shingled arches and fine interior glass and wood work.","narrative":"Built in 1895 for James Blake Kennard and his wife, this Gonzales residence is a late and unusual example of Queen Anne architecture, one of the few of its type left in Texas. The frame house rises two and a half stories under a high hip roof with gabled ells. A bold corner tower with an open arcade and six-sided pyramidal roof stands beside a two-story porch whose first level has shingled Romanesque arches and whose upper gallery is open and colonnaded. Its gables are covered with mosaic of bright glass and pottery chips, and the pediment holds a Palladian-derived stained glass window. Inside, the windows include French beveled and Tiffany leaded glass, and the floors are inlaid wood, some of it reportedly sent by friends of Kennard, a lumberman, from across the country. The exterior is painted green. Recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967, the house has been carefully restored and remains a private residence.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":"Built by Mr. and Mrs. James Blake Kennard","architectural_style":"Queen Anne (late Victorian)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; carefully restored and used as a private residence, with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.20263-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/9721/40972141/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/71000937.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000937/30481377d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000937/30481377d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kennard_House,_Gonzales,_Texas.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kennard_House,_Gonzales,_Texas.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972141","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107318594"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/gonzales-county/kennard-house-71000937/"}
