Its massing, simple forms and fine stonework make it a notable example of the architecture of German settlers in Texas. It also continues the congregation founded by German settlers in 1845.","narrative":"This cut limestone church at 296 South Seguin Street in New Braunfels was built for a congregation that traces back to German settlers who arrived with Prince Solms in 1845. The congregation chartered in 1845 and first worshipped in a log church. About 1870 it decided to build larger, formed a building committee instead of hiring a contractor, and commissioned architect Jacob Langkopf. The cornerstone was laid July 18, 1875, and the first service in the new building took place March 16, 1879. A bell tower was dedicated in 1889 and the interior was finished by 1893. The church has lancet-arched openings, limestone corner pilasters, string courses and a stained glass fan light over the double door. A 1955 renovation lengthened the nave, added transepts and rooms beside the tower, and added a basement. The nomination describes the building as strongly German in character and a notable example of German settler architecture in Texas.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific dates 1875, 1889)","architect_builder":"Jacob Langkopf (architect); built by a congregation building committee rather than a contractor","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival, with German vernacular character","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, occupied and in religious use; renovated in 1955 with a lengthened nave and added transepts.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.110394-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/9715/40971559/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/71000926.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000926/d77121a47f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000926/d77121a47f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Griffinofwales","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Protestant_Church_NB.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Griffinofwales</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Protestant_Church_NB.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100012669","name":"Central New Braunfels Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/central-new-braunfels-historic-district-100012669/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971559","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Protestant_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453730"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/comal-county/first-protestant-church-71000926/"}
